The 13th World Forestry Congress took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, between October 18 and 23. Some 160 officials from 26 countries took place, among whom Jacques Diouf, Director General of the FAO and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, President of Argentina.

In his speech, Mr Diouf brought up the need of a collaboration and better communication between the sectors of forestry, agriculture, energy and water in order to ensure a sustainable use of resources. The discussions in Buenos Aires were undoubtedly influenced by the fact that the major Climate Conference in Copenhagen will take place in just over a month, between December 6 and 18.

AMBIENTA – International Furniture, Interior Decoration and Supporting Industry Fair will be held in Zagreb (Croatia). It is a very powerful meeting point of all relevant subjects in the field of wood processing and furniture industry – producers, experts, designers, scientists, businessmen, end consumers and specialized media, and a very significant marketing incentive for development of home wood and furniture industry.

According to the exhibitors’ survey carried out during the last few years, the Croatian wood processing and furniture industry considers AMBIENTA to be the major event of the branch.

The scope of the WOOD MACHINERY 2009 Fair includes; machinery vehicles and equipment for the forestry industry, transport and storage systems for wood machining and processing, sawmill machinery, planning machinery and other machines for processing sawmill and planning mill products, machinery for the wood products industry, joinery machines, machines for furniture manufacture, especially for processing panels and veneers, machinery for the manufacture and finishing of panels and veneers, auxiliary machinery, all kinds of panels, cutting tools, electrical, mechanical hand tools, pneumatic nail, pinning gun, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment and trade publications.

The week begins on 12 October with a green building workshop on “Responding to Climate Change: Wood’s place in a global approach to green building”.  On 13-14 October the Timber Committee sessions start with the annual Market Discussions on “UNECE region forest products markets in a global economic crisis”.
